A housing developer has been slammed for not informing enough people about a public consultation on plans for 4,000 new homes. 

Taylor Wimpey is being pressured to run another consultation for its controversial GT16 project, a mixed-use development proposed for Green Lane West in Rackheath.

The exact numbers are unknown, but it is understood that many households in Rackheath and Salhouse did not receive a letter from the company about consultation events - meaning many homeowners were unable to share their views on the scheme

The issue was discussed at a recent meeting of Rackheath Parish Council, where councillors agreed to escalate the matter.

"It's a real shame," said Conservative councillor Fran Whymark, who lives in the village and represents the area on Broadland District Council.

"I knew about the consultation through the council but I wasn't even notified myself.

"A lot of people in Rackheath and Salhouse didn't know at all though.

"Everyone should have had a chance to go down, look at the plans and voice their opinions.

"It's unfair and I believe we should have another consultation to ensure everyone can give their views."

GT16, which is yet to receive planning permission but is part of the Greater Norwich Local Plan, would see the development of up to 3,850 homes, land for two primary schools, one secondary school, orchards, allotments, employment land and sports facilities.

If approved, it would represent one of the biggest developments Norfolk has seen in years.

A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey did not confirm the error but said: “Following a successful consultation with Salhouse Parish Council and Rackheath Parish Council, we will be submitting our updated planning application at the end of 2023. 

“We will also be hosting a public meeting in January 2024 to update the local community on our application submission.”
