Developers wanting to build supported housing on a site once home to the Start-Rite shoe company have revealed massively scaled-back plans for the land.

A fresh bid to build a mix of 12 one-bed flats and six bungalows on an empty plot off Mousehold Lane has been submitted to Norwich City Council, more than half the number of properties previously suggested.

Two previous plans have been put forward for the land. An approved scheme in 2018 included 42 properties, while one for 45 was rejected in May last year.

The site, next to the Rishi Indian restaurant, is split into two halves, with the front already redeveloped as a 79-bed care home as part of the 2018 application.

The land once housed the Diana Works factory that produced the famous Maclaren ‘Mac’ Handbags before being taken over by the Start-Rite Shoes company.

The properties will all be “supported housing” providing specialised support for people with a range of disabilities.

A planning statement said: “The aim is to help these vulnerable people lead an independent life in good quality, well-equipped accommodation with access to on-site support as and when required.”

The application will be decided by City Hall in due course.
