A crash in a revamped city centre road was "only a matter of time" according to a man living close to where a cyclist was injured earlier this week.

Police were called at 7pm on Monday (October 9) to a collision between a car and a bike in Ipswich Road, near City College, which left a cyclist hospitalised with a head injury.

It follows work carried out in August this year, which saw cycle lanes installed from the zebra crossing near Grove Avenue to Harford Manor School heading out of the city and from the zebra crossing to Town Close Road city-bound, as well as double yellow lines and parking bays.

On September 12, police were also called to reports of a two-vehicle crash outside City College, which left a biker with serious injuries.

Robin Barker lives nearby in Cecil Road and drove past shortly after the crash, spotting two police cars and an ambulance at the scene.

The 46-year-old who is a "motorist and keen cyclist" criticised the road changes, claiming they pose dangers to both types of road users.

He said: "It was only a matter of time before an accident happened.

He said: "As both a motorist and cyclist, it's so dangerous now.

"The introduction of the cycle lane on the City College side has squashed the car lanes together and made it a nightmare to navigate when busy.

"You’ve now got a situation where it’s impossible if a vehicle has pulled up outside City College.

"People can't physically pass without going into the other lane and potentially coming into contact with another vehicle.

"The parking bays, on the right of Ipswich Road as you are leaving the city, are so narrow that even if you park right up against the curb the vehicle is still sticking out."

A Norfolk County Council spokesman said a full safety audit was completed before work could start and that further checks have been carried out.

They added: "This scheme has only just been completed and the circumstances of these two incidents are currently unclear, but we will investigate any further information we receive as part of our standard review process."
