Canaries fans have expressed their outrage about the "dreadful" behaviour of a minority of supporters after an 11-year-old girl's head was cut by a thrown coin.

The incident occurred in the final moments of City's 1-1 draw at Coventry on Saturday, as the home fans celebrated an 88th-minute equaliser thanks to a calamitous Ben Gibson own goal.

The girl's "horrified" father shared a photo of the injury on social media, which he said was caused by a £1 coin, and said: "I hope you were on camera and don’t want to watch your team again."

A Norwich fan was ejected on suspicion of throwing the coin as tempers flared, with two alleged assaults also being investigated and four people - including a 14-year-old boy - arrested on a bus after the game.

Alan Gee, whose shirt was ripped as he tried to break up a scuffle, said: "It's disgusting behaviour.

"Speaking from a father's point of view, as well as a supporter, that girl has been scarred for life."

Robin Sainty, chairman of the Canaries Trust, slammed the behaviour. He said: "It's completely unacceptable.

"The girl could have been blinded if it hit her a few inches lower.

Norwich Evening News:

"It's a dreadful thing to do and honestly you've got to be an idiot to do something like that.

"I understand everyone gets passionate and occasionally agitated during games but throwing things at people goes way beyond what's acceptable."

Earlier this year, a Millwall fan received a five-year ban from matches after he admitted hurling a 50p piece that struck a seven-year-old girl at Carrow Road last year.

Mr Gee believes that whoever the guilty party is "needs to be made an example of".

He said: "Any violence in the stands needs to be dealt with harshly because that girl probably won't want to go to a football game again."

Mr Sainty added: "I hope the club take action once they find out who is responsible for this.

"I've got no sympathy for anyone who does something so horrible."

Norwich City have declined to comment but a Coventry City spokesman said: "We condemn the actions of any supporter whose actions bring harm to others."

The four people arrested, who are all understood to be Canaries fans, were released on bail as investigations continue.
