A city man who won his battle with Transport for London over three fines is having to fight to claim back his money after he was charged more than £250 in error.

Roger Watts, who lives in Clifton Close in Heigham Grove, drove to Dorset on May 31 in his Seat Altea, to collect a caravan, when his sat-nav took him into the capital.

For his troubles, the 82-year-old received three separate ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) fines after his marathon journey, having gone in and out of the zone.

During Mr Watts' nearly four-month-long battle appealing the fines, which Transport for London (TFL) increased to £270 each, with the help of this newspaper the charges were reduced back to the initial cost of £12.50 each.

However, TFL has now increased the stress on Mr Watts after an "admin error" resulted in him being charged £270 for one of the fines.

TFL has apologised for the error.

Mr Watts said: "I contacted TfL on September 15 to pay the £12.50 - £37.50 in total - for the fines.

"I had to pay them separately, so the first payment was £12.50 but I was charged £270 for the second.

"I was already stressed from appealing the fines because I couldn't afford it.

"Now after all of this, they've charged me the amount I spent so long fighting and after checking my bank on Friday, I still haven't had a refund."

TFL has said Mr Watts should receive his refund soon, with a spokeswoman saying: "We are very sorry that Mr Watts' refund was delayed.

"Due to an administrative error, his refund wasn’t processed, however it has now been issued and he will receive payment in the next few days."
