A Chinese takeaway which was given a one-star food hygiene rating and told "major improvement" was needed has recovered to earn a four-star rating.

Food safety inspectors visited New China in Thorpe St Andrew's Thunder Lane and found the handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was not hygienic and needed improvement.

Inspectors also said systems and checks to ensure food was safe to eat were well below the expected standard, with staff lacking proper hygiene training.

They added that the cleanliness and condition of the business facilities needed improvement.

But inspectors said they had confidence the business would improve and now, after a reinspection, the takeaway has been given a four-star rating describing its hygiene practices as "good".

The takeaway averages 3.6 out of five from more than 100 Google reviews, although three of the last five gave it a one-star rating.

One disgruntled reviewer described New China staff as having a "rude telephone manner" but the business has also amassed a large number of five-star reviews with some describing it as the best in Norwich.
