A Norwich school is celebrating an historic day after winning a city-wide athletics competition for the first time.

A total of 17 schools competed for the honours in City Sports, with a range of trophies up for grabs.

White Woman Lane school had already won the field events trophy on Monday June 26, having won the boys and girls high jump event and the year five girls throwing event at the UEA Sportspark.

On Tuesday June 27, White Woman Lane competed in the heats for hurdles, sprints and relay events.

Six out of eight relays teams and individual sprinters qualified for the finals, as well as both hurdlers.

White Woman Lane were in a strong position entering the finals on Thursday June 29 with so many students having qualified.

It was a very competitive final, with many schools finishing strongly.

White Woman Lane had podium finishes in many races, winning the year four girls individual sprint (where a record was broken), year six boys 200m, year six boys 800m and year three and six boys relay.

At the presentation ceremony staff and pupils were delighted when the results of the three days of athletic competitions were announced.

Since entering City Sports in 1993, White Woman Lane has never won the overall trophy.

Mat Gibson, PE lead at White Woman Lane, said: "I am extremely proud of all the children’s efforts and dedication in getting to this point. A huge thank you must go to Mrs Woodhouse, Mrs Williams, Mr Rice and Mr Parsons for their hard work with the children over the last few months."
