A city takeaway owner has been left devastated after the front of his shop was smashed up after a suspected drink driver crashed into it.

This incident happened just months after the same restaurant – Bombay Spice in St Augustine’s, NR3 - was raided by thieves, causing £20,000 worth of damage.

Owner Kalam Miah, 53, said that the latest incident – which happened in the early hours of Thursday (June 29) morning – will cost him £5,000 to repair the Grade II listed building’s door.

Mr Miah said: “I feel like the unluckiest man in the world – we haven't even recovered from the first incident and already there is another one.”

He added: “Broadland Housing is going to send someone out to assess the damage that has been caused – but either way it will not be easy to repair.  

“I am so shocked.

“No one was injured from my business, but my business itself has been severely damaged again. 

“And it’s not just the case of putting back some bricks – it had a really nicely finished – I can’t believe it.”

Kalam is keen for city folk to know that his business is still open as usual, and he needs support from his customers now more than ever before.  

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to St Augustine’s Street, Norwich at 4.20am on the morning of June 29 following reports of a single vehicle collision.

“The driver left the scene and was located shortly afterwards. 

“A woman, aged in her 30s, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning.”
