A city pub has said that claims from a far right organisation that it will host its members and provide a pre-protest breakfast is “nonsense” as they don’t even open in the morning.

The Cherry Tree in New Costessey has rubbished a social media post from the East Anglian Patriots in which the group said members protesting that day would be welcome to gather at the pub at 10am and that staff will be preparing bacon sandwiches.

Landlady Simone Knight said the organisation has not contacted her - and added that they do not even open until noon

She said: "I first found out when the police called and asked if I was contacted and then we had the newspapers calling.

"We've been inundated with messages asking us if we're hosting this but we're not, it's a load of old rubbish.

"Some people have been quite angry about it but it's absolutely nothing to do with us, we have no idea where it's come from.

"These rumours online are really hurtful, this can really hurt a business, and I've only just taken over the pub so this is the last thing we want.

"I really don't see where all this has come from, we want nothing to do with it."

This is the second city pub to distance itself from the group, with the Norkie in Bowthorpe forced to tell anti-migrant protesters they were not welcome earlier this week after false claims that they would be were put on leaflets and sent to homes in Bowthorpe.

The group is planning to protest against the Best Western Brook Hotel in Barnard Road in Bowthorpe hosting migrants on Saturday, July 1, while a counter-protest in support of the migrants will also take place.

Norfolk police have confirmed they are monitoring the event at the Bowthorpe hotel.
