A push for a safe pedestrian crossing to be added to a busy road has kicked off.

Keswick and Intwood Parish Council has raised concerns about locals walking across the B1113 to reach the bus stop adjacent to Low Road.

The route, which is currently set at the national speed limit, has no safe crossing - despite there being a bus stop on both sides.

"This is an issue on which the parish feels very strongly," said Jan Hill, chair of the authority.

"A safe crossing is needed on the B1113 as Keswick residents have to cross this road on a daily basis to access the bus stop on the other side of the road.

"At the present time there is no safe crossing point at all and this is such a busy road."

Deborah Sacks, South Norfolk district councillor for the Cringleford ward, has also been campaigning to improve safety on the B1113.

"Anyone getting the bus back from Norwich has to fight their way across a very wide road where traffic typically picks up significant speed, making the journey hazardous and really quite scary," she said.

"I gather the junction with the A140 is going to be remodelled but not much attention has been given to the needs of pedestrians a little further down the road, which is typical of the county council, which rarely considers the needs of pedestrians or cyclists using the rural roads in south Norfolk.

"I have contacted the Highway Authority [the County Council] to ask if they can address this situation."

Norfolk County Council said its highways team are currently looking at methods of improving safety on the route.

"We work closely with local communities to address locally important highway improvements," a spokesman said.

"And in this case we’re working on a traffic calming scheme for Low Road, Keswick adjacent to the B1113 to help tackle safety concerns at this location.

"A crossing on the main road could be considered if funding becomes available in the future."
