A block of apartments with a "substantial" fire risk rating could be set to undergo vital cladding work.

An application has been submitted to carry out cladding remediation at the Grade II listed Albion Mill, which is a part of the Read Mills development in King Street.

The plans come after a 2021 survey of the site found the building did not meet the latest fire safety guidance, brought in after the Grenfell tragedy, and that the building's fire safety work did not meet regulations when constructed back in 2007 - despite being signed off by Norwich City Council inspectors.

A fire risk assessment carried out in December 2021 also found there was a "substantial" fire risk rating at Albion Mill and its neighbours Cannon Wharf and The Malt House.

No specifics have yet been released about how the cladding remediation will be carried out and developers PJ Livesey did not clarify this when asked by the Evening News.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "We are currently in consultation with the Management Company & Residents Surveyor, along with the Local Authority with regards to Listed Building Consent.

"Once this has been agreed with all parties, PJL will undertake the works as soon as possible."

A spokesman for Norwich City Council added: "It is important that the council considers the full range of issues when considering an application.

"We would always take into account both the report Norfolk Fire and Rescue has written, along with current building regulations.

"Our conservation team would also assess the impact the cladding would have on the character of the grade II listed building King Street setting, as part of the city centre conservation area’, taking into account the specification of the particular replacement being proposed."
