Vandals have struck again in the heart of the city centre, causing significant damage to a historic part of a park.

The bandstand in Chapelfield Gardens often displays events and concerts, especially during the warmer weather.

But the wooden fencing of one of its eight side panels has been destroyed.

The broken panels have been removed, with warning tape in place until a more permanent barrier can be put in place.

Initially built in the late 19th century, the repair work is set to be costly and the damage comes just as the Norfolk and Norwich Festival kicks off, with the Adnams Spiegeltent nearby in the park.

A spokesman for Norwich City Council said: “A section of the bandstand was vandalised and is having to be replaced.

“The council has ordered the new bespoke piece, and this will be installed in the coming weeks.

“We know how much people in the city enjoy using Chapelfield Gardens and attending the many events hosted there throughout the year, so it’s a real shame when things like this happen and cause an unnecessary cost.”
