Coronation controversy is brewing in the city centre after a charity shop launched a window display featuring Princess Diana.

The Salvation Army shop in Lower Goat Lane installed the window display on Thursday with its designer saying the much-loved late Princess of Wales had been "written out of the narrative".

Jemma Banks, who designs the funny and creative dressings, has already attracted attention for her "unique" display of Queen Camilla and King Charles III, who was divorced from Diana in 1992.

But now in the adjacent window sits a crowned portrait of Diana - who was born and raised in Norfolk and died in a car crash in 1997 - surrounded with related merchandise.

Ms Banks says she wanted to celebrate the former princess who she feels is still an important part of the royal story.

She said: "We'd had a lot of Diana donations and she is obviously still mum of the future King.

"She's been written out of the narrative, so I wanted to do something totally respectful because she was the people's princess and the queen of hearts.

"In another world, it could've been her tomorrow."

Ms Banks says her display is not supposed to cause controversy with the adjacent window providing balance.

She added: "It's not an either-or, we want to celebrate the wedding as well so that's why we have both windows.

"People can think for themselves about what the meaning should be.

"If anyone does get upset we'll explain it to them. It's just a bit of fun."

The creative volunteer joined the charity shop after moving to Norwich last year in order to meet local people and boost her collection of royal tea cups from Queen Mary to the present day.

But Ms Banks said she was in no rush to add a Charles and Camilla coronation cup to her collection.

She said: "It's been a great way to get to know people and the area and add to my collection.

"But I won't be rushing to get a cup for this year, maybe in 20 years' time I might get a cup for them."
