City pubs are confident they can capitalise on the long coronation weekend - but hoping the weather doesn't rain on the royal parade.

Landlords are hoping the crowning of King Charles III will serve as an economic boost as local boozers continue to battle challenges brought by the cost of living crisis.

The British Beer and Pub Association estimates the bank holiday weekend will provide a £120m surge for watering holes across the UK - and city pubs are gearing up to make the most of the opportunity.

Not every venue is getting into the coronation spirit, as some punters would rather avoid the fanfare totally, but there is plenty of bunting and royal regalia on show already.

Live bands, unique spins on afternoon tea and one-off special drinks are among the plans of those celebrating.

Mark White, owner of The Brewery Tap in Sprowston Road, said: "We're opening at 10.30am Saturday with a giant projector to show the entire coronation in all its glory.

"We'll have bacon butties available and anyone who comes along will see the pub decked out in red, white and blue bunting of course.

"I think it'll provide a nice community feel and I know a lot of regulars are excited to come along already.

"We've also been in touch with lots of local brewers and have some one-off coronation ales for people to try over the bank holiday.

"Last year for the Queen's Jubilee we had a fantastic weekend and whether you're a royalist or not, if the sun is shining and there are places putting on a show people want to go for a beer with their friends or family."

The pub is also putting its own spin on "the most British thing possible" - afternoon tea.

Mark added: "We've ordered in all sorts of different cakes and people can pair them with our beer boards.

"So people can pair a chocolate brownie with beers such as porters or stouts, or have a Victora sponge paired with a British bitter."

Liam Reynolds of the Gibraltar Gardens, in Heigham Street, said: "On Friday night there's karaoke, as a pre-warm up to the coronation let's say.

"On the day we'll have a live band, Murphy's Lore, playing and weather permitting a barbeque starting from around 3pm.

"There will be TVs up to televise the coronation and we expect a good turnout as events like this tend to bring a lot of people in."

Mr Reynolds added that business had been "getting busier" since the new management team had taken up the reins earlier this year, in spite of sky-high energy costs.

He added: "We've been steadily taking in more money since the new year and getting busier each week.

"We've also been getting repeat customers with a few different events now and again to add something new."

Crown or frown? Are the people of Norwich excited for the coronation?

Not all pubs are getting into the royal spirit however, with business seemingly booming since the start of the year, there is confidence that punters will enjoy bank holiday  Monday regardless of the occasion.

Andy Wood, assistant manager at the Compleat Angler in Prince of Wales Road, is expecting the usual busy bank holiday.

He said: "We'll televise the coronation but we're always busy at the weekend and bank holiday so we're not doing anything out of the ordinary.

"We're expecting a similar amount of people out during the bank holiday weekend, with holidaymakers coming in off their boats by the river."
