A property maintenance worker who died after his van rolled into a field next to the A146 was over the drink-drive limit and was not wearing a seatbelt, an inquest has heard.

Samuel Garry Larwood, who was known by all as 'Sam', was driving his VW Transporter van when it crashed at Framingham Pigot, south of Norwich.

The crash happened near to the junction with Fox Lane at about 10pm on September 18 last year – the day after his 29th birthday.

Mr Larwood, originally from Costessey, was the sole occupant of the van and was pronounced dead at the scene.

At an inquest into his death, held at Norfolk Coroner’s Court on Wednesday March 5, the court heard how Mr Larwood was two-and-a-half times over the legal limit to drive.

Toxicology reports also found he had cocaine and cannabis in his system, on par with “recreational use”.

A statement from his mother, Michelle Larwood, read out in court said: “Our dearest son, Sam, loved life and enjoyed spending time with others. He had time for everyone and people loved spending time with him.

“Although he was very sociable Sam also enjoyed quiet weekends away. He would often book a cottage and enjoy long walks in the countryside.

“Sam was his happiest at work, where he worked with his dad. He loved problem solving and could turn his hand to anything from building, plumbing and plastering to name a few of his skills.

“His death has left a huge hole in many people’s hearts, but he will live on in all the special memories we have of him.”

Area coroner, Yvonne Blake, recorded a verdict of death by a road traffic collision.
