The long wait for green space and play areas in a city community is nearing its end after work began to level the overgrown mess left by builders.

Homeowners living in the White House Farm estate, in Sprowston, have kept pressure on the developers to get on with the planned community facilities.

Land off Blue Boar Lane is set to be developed with a skatepark and play area among the assets being added for those living nearby.

Bill Couzens, chairman of Sprowston Town Council, said: "As far as the open spaces go things are progressing.

"There are three areas around White House Farm which are being progressed - being levelled and seeded in time for the summer.

"There's two play equipment areas, one in Overstrand Way, another down near Starling Avenue and the large area around Harrison's Wood should also be getting done as well.

"We're still waiting on a few other open spaces but it's a step in the right direction."

Martin Booth, who represents Sprowston North East ward, said he'd also received several requests for a pedestrian crossing, in Atlantic Avenue, to provide safer access to the nursery school and other businesses at White House Farm.

Included in the town council's latest meeting agenda, Persimmon Homes outlined what it would do in conjunction with the consortium of developers comprising Taylor Wimpey and Hopkins Homes.

The letter said: "The area would be all clear of debris with topsoil turned over, levelled, lightly consolidated and free from surface stone or other debris."

Mr Couzens added that even with the previous delays he'll "have to take the developers' word" on the plans.

He said: "They've said they'll do it so hopefully it'll be done in good time.

"The point has always been that the people living here, paying council tax and maintenance charges, have not been getting the services they deserve.

"Hopefully that will begin to change."
