Tributes have been paid to a city centre landlord who has died while on holiday in India.

Ivan Brown, 71, owned the Murderers in Timberhill from 1984 until 2014 and has been hailed as a "much-loved character".

According to Indian newspaper the Hindustan Times, he was electrocuted while visiting the country with a friend named David Linder on a one-year tourist visa.

The paper said he came into contact with a live wire while taking photos at Baikunth Nagar near Dalhousie in Chamba district on Sunday.

Close friend, Roger Cawdron, landlord of the Ribs of Beef in Magdalen Street, said Ivan would be greatly missed.

Norwich Evening News:

Mr Cawdron said: "Ivan was a dear friend of mine, he was certainly a character.

"He will be very sadly missed by all of his friends and family, myself included."

His comments were echoed by Darren Stubbs who played for the Murderers' Real Ale Madrid five-a-side team when it was set up in the 1990s.

Mr Stubbs said: "We used to play in the Lads' Club on Tuesdays and I had a meeting with him after he agreed to sponsor us.

"I was a bit nervous when I sat down with him as everyone thought of him as a legend.

"And I was even more worried when I had to tell him we had nothing in the kitty because we'd drank it all away in his pub.

"But he agreed to pay for everything from shirts and socks to printing them up with the pub logo.

"He was a great man every time we won he gave us port and cigars."

One of the pub's drinkers during his time as landlord, Amanda Young, paid tribute on Facebook describing his death as "awful news".

She said: "Ivan was such a great landlord.

"I have so many great memories and the amazing times I and my friends had in The Murderers for many years."
