Every dog owner's nightmare became reality for a city family after one of their pups was attacked by two off-the-lead dogs in a park.

The vicious bites have left the leg of golden labrador Molly so damaged, shredding the muscle underneath, that her owners are worried "she'll never be the same again".

Tina Colney lives in Dussindale Drive with her husband, teenage daughter and three beloved dogs Luna, Fifi and seven-year-old Molly.

Mrs Colney, 53, recalls the incident which happened around midday on Friday, March 24 at Fitzmaurice Pavilion in Thorpe St Andrew.

"My husband was walking our dogs on their lead with them all just minding their own business," she said.

"There was a man who was near the new dog agility course who had two off-the-lead dogs - larger, stocky Rottweiler sized - who came rushing over to our dogs growling and aggressive.

"Before my husband could do anything one of them sunk its teeth into Molly's back leg.

"The owner saw the attack but refused to put his dogs on a lead and merely waved them off."

The attack has left Molly with a wound eight inches by five inches wide, with the lab now too afraid to go outside.

Mrs Colney has reported the incident to the police.

It's also left Mrs Colney with a £900 vet bill which she said could "increase to almost £3,000 with ongoing antibiotics and further operations".

She added: "We're absolutely devastated. This will change Molly for the rest of her life - she's traumatised.

"The leg is so damaged she won't be the same again. She needs to be kept in a crate for the next 14 days and can't go upstairs.

"I'm angry that this owner is still allowed out with their off-the-lead dogs as they don't understand the devastation the attack has had on our pet.

"If owners can't recall their dogs they need to be kept on a lead to keep everyone safe."
