A concerned neighbour has succeeded in her attempts to have a battered piece of street furniture with sharp edges and exposed wires repaired.

Dragonfly Way in Bowthorpe is home to the disused Virgin Media cabinet which Joanna de Vincentiis, who lives and walks in the area, has been trying to get removed in recent weeks.

Joanna said: “The cabinet has been destroyed and ripped open.

“The wires and cables are loose, and the front and side of the cabinet is ripped and very rusty.

“I called Openreach, and their engineer came out within 24 hours, they confirmed that it was a Virgin Media cabinet.”

The engineer was able to identify that the cabinet was no longer live, but neighbours said that made it no less of a hazard as it was very sharp and if someone were to fall, they could have got nasty injuries.

It's not clear how the cabinet became so badly damaged though.

Joanna said: “Nearby there is a Norwich City Council green litter bin that keeps being knocked over leaving all the rubbish spilling out.

“Someone in NR5 said that two girls keep causing damage to the bin so whether they also caused the damage to the cabinet I do not know.”

But Joanna said she had tried more than 20 times to submit an online form about the damage to Virgin Media with no luck.

She added: “it is frustrating, if someone tripped over it would cause some serious damage, not to mention the rust on it.”

However, at 2pm on Tuesday, March 28 Joanna noticed a Virgin Media van parked near to the site.

A Virgin Media O2 spokesman said: “An engineer is on site today removing an old broadband cabinet in Bowthorpe that has been damaged.

“No services have been impacted by this cabinet.”
