A city couple were charged £700 too much by an energy giant - after it turned out they were also paying their neighbours' bill.

Emma Peters and Pedro Fraga, both 21, were shocked when they realised their gas bills continued to rise due to the meter reading mix-up.

The pair, who live in Costessey, found out that for eight months they had been paying the gas bill for the family above them as well as their own after British Gas received incorrect meter readings.

They've said the ongoing battle to rectify the issue has affected them both "mentally and financially".

Emma, an accounting student, said: "British Gas owe me more than £700 and I've had enough.

"They've been billing me for my neighbour's gas bill and they're not listening to me, even after getting the Energy Ombudsman involved.

"I moved in July 2022 so it's been eight months trying to sort it and now it's affecting both mine and Pedro's mental health.

"I even thought about moving home it's caused that much stress."

A spokesman for British Gas said: "We were given the incorrect meter details when the energy supply for this new-build property was first registered with us.

"We've reached out to Ms Peters to apologise for not fixing this earlier and have reassured her that we're updating her account with the correct meter details and will adjust her bill in line with accurate meter readings."

Emma added that the property was her first home, but instead of being excited the mixed up meter readings had "caused nothing but problems".

"My bill still shows my neighbour's meter reading," she said.

"We can't afford to pay for two gas bills - it's just too much and I don't see why I should have to pay in the first place."
