A piece of land tucked away in a prime city centre spot has hit the market for an undisclosed amount.

Back in 2008, planning permission was applied for to convert the former Labour Club building in Bethel Street and make way for new homes, totalling 22 dwellings.

The area being marketed, around a quarter of an acre in size, is the remainder of the permission and has planning permission for 14 dwellings.

It sits behind Hindle House in Bethel Street, a hostel, and the 52 luxury apartments at Aldwych House.

The former Labour Club building, although not on the land for sale, is Grade II-listed and has been converted into eight self-contained flats as part of the same planning permission.

The Labour Club at 59 Bethel Street was purchased by Norwich Labour in 1935, with neighbouring 57 was bought a few years later.

The surrounding area is widely residential while also having a strong retail presence and broad selection pubs and restaurants.

The remaining undeveloped land for the 14 additional homes is a clear site and is currently used as a car park.

The application for the remaining homes including nine houses, five apartments and associated parking.

Richard Shuldham, from the development team at Savills' in Norwich - who is leading the sale - said offers for the site were being invited via private treaty.

"The sale represents a rare and exciting opportunity to purchase a city centre site with planning permission already implemented," he said.

"The land has been in the same ownership for a number of years, with the labour club converted into eight flats in 2016.

"This is the next stage of that development.

"Bethel Street is in the heart of Norwich city centre – close to its amenities, shops, restaurants and Chapelfield Gardens – and new townhouse developments have historically sold very well.

"Sites such as this don’t come up very often and consequently, we expect interest from a range of bidders and developers of all sizes."
