Norwich is bucking the trend in the model railway world as hobbyists turn to their trains for some escapism during tough times.

However, on a national scale the hobby has been derailed, with major manufacturer Hornby reporting sales are “behind budget” due to pressure on consumer finances amid rocketing living costs.

But at Great Eastern Models in Plumstead Road sales are booming with the store reporting a "huge increase" in trade post-lockdown.

Anne Martin, 49, who co-owns the store says many people got into modelling during lockdown and have continued to extend their layouts since restrictions ended.

Norwich Evening News:

She said: "To be honest, while others are struggling we've seen a huge increase in sales and interest.

"We're bucking the trend.

"We picked up a lot of new business during Covid when people were on furlough so they had money but nothing to do so turned to model railways.

Norwich Evening News:

"I think most hobbies are on the up because it's really good for mental health. When you're setting up and running your trains you don't think about the doom and gloom and the bad news."

The shop is based near the Heartsease roundabout, opposite the Aldi supermarket, and has been open for 35 years.

Ms Martin said she believed the shop was lucky to have the model railway community, who like to come in to the shop and chat, as her customers amid a surge in online shopping.

Norwich Evening News:

She added: "It's absolutely brilliant, it's a community hobby so people like to chat and get advice.

"I think they're fed up with isolation and also we're specialists so people can get more from coming here than going online."

Norwich Evening News:

Ms Martin said the cost of living crisis had caused a boom in the shop's second-hand trade which sees it charge as much as half-price for pre-loved locomotives.

She said: "We're doing a roaring second-hand trade, people are bringing back carloads to free up some money at the moment.

Norwich Evening News:

"A second-hand set is the best way to get in to it as you can pick up a really nice set for about half the price."
