City record shops have spoken of their joy after vinyl became the UK's second most popular form of physical entertainment.

More people bought vinyl records than Playstation and Xbox games in 2022 according to the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) with only Nintendo Switch games outselling wax.

And Norwich's many record shops say the industry has continued to grow since the vinyl revival started around 2008.

Norwich Evening News:

Some store owners have even gone as far as to say the ever-increasing demand for records has kept them in business.

Andy Tillett, who has run Press to Play, in St Benedicts Street, for more than 20 years, is one of those who says vinyl keeps his business running.

He said: "I sell a lot of vinyl, it's definitely a growth business.

"I don't know how they work out which formats are the most popular but vinyl has certainly kept us going.

Norwich Evening News:

"We still sell CDs but they don't make as much money, with vinyl you can be having a bad day and then a couple of people you haven't seen for a while come in and buy a couple of rare ones each and it becomes a good day.

"The first week of January is always busy, you get a lot of people who have got a record player for Christmas, but this week has been steady too and it's all records.

"I think it's great if people are sitting down and listening to records again."

At Venus Vinyl, in Magdalen Street, owner Ben Venus said he saw new people buying records almost daily despite the financial challenges of the cost of living crisis.

Norwich Evening News:

He said: "It's definitely growing day on day. I had a couple in yesterday who had just bought their first turntable.

"A lot of people come and say they've had a turntable for Christmas. Year on year there are new faces in the shop.

"As CDs drift out of popularity vinyl just gets more and more popular.

Norwich Evening News:

"Sales don't always increase in this economy but I speak to people who've just got a turntable almost daily.

"People like the exclusivity of it with coloured options and limited versions which we specialise in.

"And it's still growing, it's only going to get bigger."
