City darts leagues are enjoying a rush of fresh interest ahead of star names Fallon Sherrock and Raymond van Barneveld stepping up to the oche in Norwich.

According to the bosses of city darts leagues, high-octane matches at the top level such as Tuesday night's PDC World Championship final have introduced a new generation of arrow lovers.

And fans will be able to see some top players up close and personal at Epic Studios on Sunday, January 22, as it hosts the Champion of Champions competition - with tickets almost sold out.

Norwich Evening News:

Local enthusiasts had expected to see a decline in players and teams post-pandemic with pubs closing and people not playing for so long.

But the leagues kept the majority of their clubs and are now seeing regular requests to join in.

Christine Grimwood, secretary of Norwich's Monday Independent Darts League, said: "We have had a real boom post-Covid.

"We have now got 37 teams in the Monday league, we only lost a few after lockdown and we thought we'd lose loads.

"The game's popularity had started to dwindle at one point so we're really happy, we always have people enquiring."

Norwich Evening News:

Ms Grimwood, 72, who has been playing since she was 11, said she felt the game's simplicities were what had made it so popular.

She added: "People are looking forward to enjoying themselves again and darts is easy to enjoy and I've made so many friends playing.

"Tuesday night's match was incredible the sport is doing so well at the moment.

Norwich Evening News:

"The only problem we are having is the pubs are closing so we're sometimes short on a place to play."

Rick Lennox at Epic Studios said his Magdalen Street venue's event was three tickets away from selling out and added there were plans to eventually hold two darts events per year.

Norwich Evening News:

He said: "The tournament at the Ally Pally has definitely helped.

"We're really pleased with it, especially Fallon Sherrock, who is someone I've followed for a while I think she's opened the game up to a new audience.

Norwich Evening News:

"We've wanted to do something like this for a while. Hopefully this is the first of many.

"There's a real buzz about the place for this, I think it'll be as exciting as the Ally Pally and people won't have to travel."
