Police have pledged to crack down on "public sex activity" which has caused years of distress for people living on the outskirts of the city.

The A1151 lay-by between Wroxham and Rackheath has become a hotspot for meet-ups over the past two years, however officers had been unable to intervene due to legal loopholes.

Police can now be issue warnings to those involved in anti-social behaviour in the lay-by, with those who amass a number of warnings facing prosecution.

It comes after a number of other locations in the area faced similar problems, including Rackheath's 14th century church which saw a lane blocked in 2020 to stop the behaviour.

The lay-by has even been listed online as a location for public sex.

Police action comes after a meeting was held with councillors and people living in Rackheath, Salhouse and Wroxham at Rackheath's Hilltop Cafe.

Wroxham Parish Council chairman, Malcolm Allsop, who was at the meeting, said: "Police informed us they'd found what they hope will be a solution to the issue, which is great because it's been going on for a long while now.

Norwich Evening News:

"In the past police have been tied up with bureaucracy.

"For a few years now public sex activity has caused concern among the community.

"It's mostly an issue in Rackheath and Salhouse, but our worry was that action could lead to it being displaced and moving closure to our village, but police have assured us they'll still have the power to move people on wherever they are."

A police spokeswoman added officers were looking for more information from those in the area on how they can solve the issue and keep it away.

She said: "Police organised a community meeting at the Hilltop Café between 11am and 1pm to invite local residents to share their thoughts about local crime and anti-social behaviour in the layby of the A1151 Wroxham Road.

"A survey will be used by officers to gather further information which will be used to help form solutions to deter any future offending."
