An unusual fashion fusion swept the city this weekend in a bid to get more people to sign up.

A group called Norfolk Steampunk showed off their eye-catching fashion with a wander through the historic streets while sharing the group's ethos: "be splendid".

David Cole, 66, has been a member of the group for six years and describes steampunk as: “A vision of the future from a Victorian perspective.”

On Saturday the group carried out something which they call a city or a town 'invasion'.

David said: “The town invasions are sort of like a recruitment drive for us.

“We want people to come and join us – it's so fun to be involved with something different where you can meet so many new people.

“It's also something that doesn’t involve sitting in a pub which is nice.”

The group enjoyed their city trip on Saturday as so many shoppers got involved.

“We had so many people taking our photos and asking questions to learn more about who we are and what we do, it was a really enjoyable day and we will be back,” he added.

David has many different costumes and elements to his outfit but added there is one thing that anyone who is choosing to dress in steampunk fashion will need.

“Goggles,” David explained.

He continued: “The goggles around a top hat are perhaps the most recognisable element of the fashion trend and if people think they don’t know what steampunk is – they will when they see the hat and goggles combination.

“They are welding-type goggles – it is not necessary but it helps to differentiate the style from straightforward Victorian wear.”

David says the absolute best thing about being part of this fashion movement is the ethos that all steampunkers embody.

He said: “We all live by ‘be splendid to one another' ethos which is really why we go out to events. We want to spread that way of treating each other throughout the country.”

He added anyone thinking of joining is welcome - they don't have to be dressed up.

The group plans on holding monthly meetings at the Hethersett social club to spread their message and kindness throughout the Norwich community.
