It can be one of the most fraught moments of the Christmas season... picking out the perfect tree, from among a broad selection of shapes and sizes.

Now, experts from a local garden centre has provided a series of tips on how people can narrow down their options and make the right choice.

Sprowston Garden Centre has more than 500 trees in stock, most of which are Nordmann firs, although they have a smaller selection of Fraser firs, which tend to be slimmer.

Stefan Smith, who works at the centre, said: “For many, picking the perfect tree is a family event.

"They all come out together to choose their perfect tree for that year.

"Getting your tree home is when it really starts to feel Christmassy.”

So what makes the best tree?

Peter Whitlam, another assistant at the centre, said: “It’s all down to personal choice.

"A real tree will give you the authentic look and smell which can never be fully replicated – and it eliminates the need to store it in the loft.

“But there are great artificial alternatives – more tailored shapes and sizes to suit your environment.

“A pre-lit option is great for ease but can work out more expensive.”

When opting for a real Christmas tree – there are some rules to follow to ensure you get the most out of it throughout the festive season.

Stefan said: “Consider the space you have – both width and height. It’s important to remember they always look bigger once they are in your house.

“Cut trees still need water, so a tree stand that will hold a sufficient amount of water is a must – when you get the tree home, cut around an inch off the bottom, and put in water within an hour.

“Keep away from a radiator or fire to avoid needle drop.”

Peter added: “Never buy a netted tree – it will hold a surprising amount of heat which will contribute towards needle drop.

“You can’t see the shape, size or quality of the tree inside the net either.”

Sprowston sells out of trees yearly, so it’s important to get in early.

Opening times are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm and Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm.
