Cops have been speaking to homeowners after problems with parking on the bend of a narrow street causing pavement obstructions.

Sprowston Town Council is monitoring parking in Colindeep Lane in the town in conjunction with the county council highways department and police.

It comes after a homeowner complained to the town council about cars parking on the path at the bend in the road opposite the beauty salon at the Edwards Road end of the street.

This has made it difficult for wheelchair users and prams to pass - causing them to have to walk into the road where visibility is restricted.

Bill Couzens, chairman of Sprowston Town Council, said: "The police are continuing to monitor parking and have spoken to three residents about parking in the pavement at the top end of Colindeep Lane.

"There are still issues with the pavement being blocked at the lower end which needs to be addressed. Local councillors too are monitoring the situation.

"It seems like a local sport to park cars wholly on the pavement blocking them which makes life extremely difficult for pedestrians who are then forced to walk in the road.

"It's even worse for those who rely on walking aids, wheelchairs or those who are pushing prams or buggies. Pavements are for people."

Julie Sheldrake, who lives in Colindeep Lane, said: "Twice there have been near misses with the public in the dark on bikes with cars parked on the bend."

The issue was discussed during the Sprowston Town Council meeting on November 9.

Mr Couzens said the issue was presented to the council very well, and the authority agreed the situation had improved since local beat managers had spoken to those concerned.

He added: "The town council has no powers to install any road markings such as double yellow lines, and even enforcement of them is beyond the power of the town council.

John Fisher, Conservative county councillor who sits on the town council, previously said "there was not an issue" with parking and that photos sent to the authority of cars on the pavement "really prove nothing".
