Details of a major transformation at a historic pub near the city have been revealed.

The Red Lion, in Drayton, is undergoing a major refurb, costing more than £100,000, and will see the capacity of its beer garden increase from 90 people to more than 400.

Other upgrades to the Grade II listed pub, in Fakenham Road, include the addition of a heated pergola, complete with Wi-Fi and table service, alongside a new children's play area.

Originally built in 1678, the pub will receive a complete makeover before it reopens on Friday, December 16.

Kathryn Kedzlie, general manager, said “We are delighted to finally be able to show our customers all the amazing changes that we’ve made to the Red Lion.

"We can’t wait for our regulars to see the transformation, particularly our new outside area, which we know will be popular all year round.

“We wanted to bring a hint of luxury to our local community in Drayton, and I think that’s exactly what we’ve done.

"We have a fantastic new food menu that is not to be missed, and that alongside our new look gives the feel of being in a city centre, but without losing the warm feeling of a village pub.”

To celebrate the reopening, the Red Lion is giving away a £50 bar tab to spend on its new food and drink menu.

The pub will also be hosting a New Year event with live music from Benjamin Lake, who starred on The Voice.

Guests can also take advantage of regular events throughout the week, with senior lunch specials on a Tuesday, coffee and cake on Wednesday mornings, and a cocktail and mocktail night on Fridays.

The expansion of the pub has also created 15 new jobs.
