Norwich's Tunnel of Light has been brightening up the Hay Hill area of the city for the past few weeks.

Normally cascades of different coloured lights will move up and down the display, dazzling passers-by.

But today (November 22) it has been reduced to a flicker amid "technical issues".

The display appears to have malfunctioned, with only a few blocks of lights working and others flickering intermittently.

In a statement on Visit Norwich's Facebook page, run by Norwich BID, engineers are reportedly "on their way" to repair the festive lights as quickly as possible.

The statement states: "We're so sorry - the Tunnel of Light is currently having some technical issues.

"We are aware, and engineers are on their way to repair it as soon as possible. Thank you for bearing with us - we'll let you as soon as it's back up in working order."

By the evening, the lights had returned to normal and people could be seen enjoying the display as they walked through.

The Tunnel of Light has been slammed as a "waste of money" by members of the public, especially when many people and businesses are feeling the pinch.

Stefan Gurney, executive director of Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) explained that the LED display wasn't paid for by taxpayers.

It is paid for by a levy from Norwich businesses.

He added: "The lights are something that we work on all year round and we know the public and businesses look forward to seeing them go up each year.

"The lights are designed to create a welcoming, festive atmosphere across the city in winter months, helping to support retail and hospitality businesses in particular."
