A man whose legacy will live on in his thriving motorcycle business has been remembered by his family, following his death at the age of 83.

Maxwell Anthony Leslie Tinkler was born in January 1939 to Leslie and Gladys Tinkler.

He grew up in Little Armes Street, behind the Tinklers showroom in Northumberland Street, which was owned by his father.

Max attended the technical school in Duke Street before joining the family motorcycle business aged 15, which had been established in 1933.

He remained at Tinklers for the entirety of his career - bar a short stint in the army - until his retirement in 1998.

Max met his wife Janice - who died in 2011 - in Hemsby while she was on holiday and while he was at a motorcycle meet with friends. The couple married in 1961.

They had two children, David and Alison, both of whom work for Tinklers to this day.

His grandson, Grant Newstead, who is the fourth generation to work in the family-run dealership, said: "In Max's time he made the most adaptation to the family business.

"The shop itself was just a shed to begin with and he built it up over the years and created the foundation of the company we are lucky to have today.

"He was incredibly proud to be part of the family business and what he was able to build on.

"He dedicated his entire career to Tinklers."

Grant described his grandfather as "smartly dressed and always active", having enjoyed his love of sport in his retirement - namely golf.

"He was always incredibly active," he added.

"He played an extraordinary amount of golf and his garden was always immaculately kept.

"He was an individual that was very full of life.

"We're surrounded by what he built and his impact will live on."

Max died on October 24 aged 83. He leaves behind his children and grandsons Guy, Jake, Scott and Grant.

A funeral service will be held at 11.30am on Thursday, November 24 at St Faith's Crematorium, followed by a wake. All are welcome.
