A man who stabbed a student near the University of East Anglia campus, leaving him with life-threatening injuries, has been jailed.

Emil Lubbat, 22, knifed the student following an altercation on Bluebell Road in the early hours of December 11, 2019.

Norwich Crown Court was told the victim, a fourth-year film and television studies student, was left with serious injuries after being stabbed in the stomach.

He underwent emergency surgery and has since subsequently had to have his spleen removed.

Norwich Evening News:

Prosecutor Duncan O'Donnell said the attack came after the victim and a group of friends had left the UEA’s LCE venue and had become involved in the confrontation.

He said following a physical confrontation the victim realised he had been stabbed telling a friend: “Mate, I’m in trouble. I’ve been stabbed.”

In a statement one of his friends told police how he had then lifted up his shirt and “I could see his guts hanging out”.

Lubbat, from Richmond, London, had previously pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of the knife.

When interviewed he told police he had taken out a folding knife after punches had been thrown in the altercation.

He claimed the stabbing had occurred accidentally when the two men came together.

Ian James, mitigating, said probation service pre-sentence reports had found Lubbat to be kind, remorseful, gentle and caring.

“The overall picture is of a young man for whom this sort of behaviour is quite out of character,” he added.

Jailing him for 21 months, Judge Katherine Moore said: “The disorder came at the end of a confrontation but in very troubling circumstances and circumstances that could have cost the victim his life.

“Significant surgery was required to save his life and he has been profoundly affected by the events which took place in the early hours of 11 December, 2019.

"In my judgement, you were reckless in the extreme under the influence of alcohol and you engaged in pushing and shoving. It could have all been avoided if you had not taken out and deployed the weapon.

"The effects on the victim have been considerable and we should not look over the effects on your own career choices."
