A rapidly-growing town could have a new doctors' surgery after plans to extend a business park were given the green light.

The proposal from Mark Allison, of Barford-based Eastern Power Systems, to extend Elm Farm Business Park in Norwich Common, Wymondham, was approved by South Norfolk Council on November 8.

It will see 11 new units built on the land on the edge of Wymondham, to include a doctors' surgery and offices for research and development.

Norwich Evening News:

Kathryn Cross, Wymondham Town Council member and owner of Centre Paws dog-friendly business hub, said: "There is a shortage of doctors surgery places in the whole of Wymondham. If there is something that can improve capacity that has got to be a good thing.

"We need the GPs to come here though because there is no point in having a doctors surgery if it sits empty.

"It is in a good location because of the way Wymondham has expanded."

"If the owner can fill the units that is great for enterprise and small businesses. Hopefully they will be affordable."

Norwich Evening News:

There are currently two GP surgeries in Wymondham and Humbleyard Practice in neighbouring Hethersett.

She added there was a slight concern over an increase in traffic on the B1172 which runs alongside the business park and links Wymondham with Hethersett because "there seem to be permanent roadworks".

But Mrs Cross added the improvements to Thickthorn and A11 would remove the excess traffic.

A planning report said: "The proposal moves towards a more functional design for the business units reflecting the demand for smaller industrial units over office accommodation in the current post-covid commercial market, however the doctors' surgery building, which is located closer to the front of the site retains the more traditional appearance and a material pallet of previous proposals.

"The surgery building was reduced in size to reflect the one-and-a-half storey form of the existing units and is now well related in terms of location form and materials.

"It is located close to the front of the development and will act to largely obscure the industrial units from Norwich Common."
