A long-running Scout group is hoping to secure a share of a pot of charity cash to get youngsters growing their own food.

The 1st Attleborough (St Mary's) Scout Group is one of 10 East Anglian nominees which have reached the final stage of the Readers’ Choice Cash for Charity campaign.

The group, based in Station Road, hopes to get a slice of the £16,000 on offer so it can provide an outside planter and patio so members of the group can grow their own vegetables.

Leaders at the group, which was founded in 1912, said it was important to teach youngsters about food.

Norwich Evening News:

Group Scout leader Kirsty Clements said: "We are hoping to get enough vouchers to buy planters.

"If we get enough, then we plan for sections of the group to grow their own food to cook.

"And if we can, we would like to be able to lay a patio to put them on, too."

Mrs Clements said: "We would like to be able to teach everyone from our youngest Beavers to our oldest Scouts about food miles and growing their own food."

The group, run by volunteers, caters for young people aged 5¾ to 25 years old, offering opportunities from abseiling to water sports.

It has Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers sections.

Readers will determine which groups benefit from the £16,000 Cash for Charity campaign pot by collecting tokens in the Eastern Daily Press and the Norwich Evening News over the coming weeks.

Tokens must be taken to collection points or be posted. Charities get more of the share depending on how many tokens are collected for them.

For instance, if a charity got 50pc of all tokens collected, it would receive half of the £16,000.

The money is being provided by the charitable arm of the Gannett Foundation, the parent company of Newsquest Media Group, which publishes the Eastern Daily Press and Norwich Evening News.

This year the foundation will donate £128,000 to charities across the country.

Tokens can be taken to Cash for Charity collection boxes at local supermarkets, newsagents and other prominent locations in the area, or by sending to Prospect House, Rouen Road, Norwich, NR1 1RE ahead of the deadline of Sunday, November 20.
