A restaurant located in one of the most historic areas of Norwich has come up for sale.

The former Tatlers restaurant in Tombland is on the market at a guide price of £695,000. Selling agents, Attik, say it offers a rare opportunity as either another business venture or even as a home.

The property dates back to the mid-18th century and was Grade II listed by Historic England in 1972. The building itself is distinctive, boasting several intricate architectural details which can be seen from the outside, including segmented arches around its ground-floor windows and quoins, the square masonry bricks which sit at the corner of each outside wall.

For decades, the Victorian-era building has been synonymous with fine wine and dining, and it was known as Tatlers even before the current owner purchased the building around six years ago.

Since then, he has overseen extensive updates to the space, mainly on the ground and first floor, but there are areas which do need a bit of TLC.

The internal space is set over four levels and includes grand double doors at the entrance, which open into a large hallway.

To the right there is an impressive dining area with a marble fireplace. A shuttered window to the front overlooks Tombland – often considered the heart of Norwich nightlife – and to the rear there is a cloakroom.

On the other side of the hall there is a lounge and a bar area, and at the rear of the building is a commercial kitchen. This is fully fitted with stainless steel surfaces and storage, plus a good range of commercial appliances, including fridges, fryers and dishwashers, all designed for professional catering.

Upstairs, there is a second but no less impressive dining room, which has a bar and seating area and overlooks the historic street to the front.

Three office spaces are located at the very top of the building and offer lovely views – some towards the front, and over to Tombland, and others towards the cathedral and its surrounding grounds.

The building also has a basement, at what used to be street level. It has an impressive flagged floor with two cellars and a cold store, all measuring 459 sq ft.

Despite its commercial use, the building was originally constructed as a house, and a spokesperson for Attik Estate Agents believes this could be the case again, subject to planning, although it would need a bit of work – including installing a proper family bathroom rather than the customer’s cloakrooms it currently has.

Madeline Ward, who is liaising between the vendor and Attik, says: “If you had the money to throw at it, it would make a stunning property. Tombland is one of the most attractive bits of the city.”
