I only got the briefest of chances to pop out and watch a band last week, as I spent most of it organising this year's Hot City Sounds, which I'll tell you more about in a moment.

Last Friday I popped down to B2 to for the rockabilly special featuring the Hyperjax, Shakeout and Mojo Kings. It was a pretty rammed night and its nice to see there is still a healthy scene for this traditional style rock and roll.

I'm always confused by its many spin off genres, some of which require you to dance with your elbows flailing all over the place. There is still something very idealistic about bands that contain fat bodied semi acoustic guitars and a double bass. Yes, the technology has come quite a way but the sound is primarily the same. I think it's safe to say rock'n'roll really will never die.

The Mojo Kings from Essex kicked off the night well but finished in real style when they covered the Stones' Paint It Black far better than the Stones have ever played it, I think! Shakeout were the local contingent of the night and revved it up a bit more, being more psycho than rockabilly but still very good. Finally came the Hyperjax from Manchester way and I'd be honest in saying I felt they had less of a spark than the previous two bands. Despite being far more polished, they looked very much like a band going through the motions.

As I said The Hot City Sounds festival is coming together nicely running from July 3-11, although if you still feel your band would like to play please get in touch via Myspace.

Latest updates to add to the fantastic launch night of the Kabeedies and Le Tetsuo is the confirmation of two of Norwich's most accomplished bands in a double headliner for Sunday, July 5, Sennen and The Lost Levels. The rock night is shaping up into a royal humdinger with Killerhurts headlining along with Arch Stanton and Fletch Cadillac, followed the night after by an artrock line-up headlined by The Neutrinos and The Uh Ohs.

Moving across town to The Waterfront there is an excellent festival gig featuring Kill It Kid now signed to One Little Indian and fronted by ex Norwich lad Chris Turpin. The night also includes a Milkbar showcase.

The week ends with two excellent party nights at B2 on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11: starting with the feisty femme trio Violet Violet and new wave rockers Tin Man and finishing with the grand finale on the Saturday featuring The Great Shakes, The Loyal Few, The Barlights and the fantastic Foster Kids. Please feel free to check out the full line up at the Myspace site, but I'm sure I'll keep you posted as more great nights evolve.
