Loud music was blaring out of the Stanley pub when I visited at about 6pm, and the fun had already started.

There were about a dozen people enjoying themselves up at the bar, and the atmosphere was electric.

Many of the regulars said that one of the reasons they visited was because it was a fun pub, and manager Josie Dix seemed to be enjoying herself as much as anyone.

She's been in charge at the Punch Taverns pub, which is leased to Sue Coleman, since March, but was previously a barmaid there.

She has worked at several Norwich pubs, including the Lawyer, when it was the Fugitive and Firkin, so has plenty of experience and knowledge about what community pubs should be like.

Her first job was in the kitchen at the King's Head in Hethersett and her first bar job was at the Slug and lettuce, formerly in the city centre.

She said: 'I like the social aspect of it. I have previously worked in an office job in marketing for my dad, but I prefer this.

'You get to meet lots of people, and some of those I got to know at the Fugitive, now drink here.'

Her definition of a community pub is somewhere you can visit at any time of the day and meet someone you knew.

'A couple moved in across the street recently.

'They did not know anyone, but now they are regulars here,' she said.

'We are a friendly, relaxed pub where children are welcomed. Our selling point is that we are not a wine bar.

'You don't have to get dressed up to come here, and there's no dress code. It's a come-as-you-are type of place.'

They have a resident pool team, live music on Saturday night, and in the future are considering a monthly poker night and fancy dress events.

'We have got Wherry real ale but most of the customers are lager or shots kinds of people. Food comes and goes, and sometimes does not go down too well.

'Most of our customers live locally. We are not really a sports pub.'
