The number of people wanting to work in the make-up industry is on the rise in Norwich as another beauty school is set to open its doors this September. Emma Harrowing finds out more.

There seems to be a big demand for learning the art of make-up application in Norwich. When Samantha and Nicola Chapman set up make-up blog Pixiwoo in October 2008 the site, which includes YouTube videos of how to create the latest make-up looks, quickly gained a loyal and very large following. The Norwich sisters' success was recently duplicated by their friend and fellow make-up artist Tanya Burr who is the girlfriend of the Chapman's brother.

Now Pixiwoo offers make-up classes to share their secrets and teach wannabe make-up artists. The classes proved so popular that they are fully booked for 2012.

Then there is the Jackie Hamilton School of Beauty which has recently moved to Dove Street in Norwich Lanes to offer day and evening classes in a range of make-up and beauty subjects and, of course, hairdressing and beauty therapy courses at City College Norwich.

As if that wasn't enough to quench the thirst for make-up knowledge, another beauty school is set to open its doors in Norwich next month.

Make-up artists Danielle Richmond, from Bowthorpe, and Carli La Motte, from Norwich, both work on the Mac counter in Jarrold and are busily preparing their new Norfolk Hair and Beauty Training Academy on Concorde Road ready for their first intake of beauty students.

'I have found there is a big demand for beauty, especially learning make-up application in Norwich,' explains 34-year-old Danielle. 'Working at Mac, we are always asked by customers where they can train in make-up but most haven't got time to go to college full-time. We are hoping that this school will enable those interested in developing a career in beauty to fit training in around their job and life.'

Danielle and Carli met at the College of West Anglia in King's Lynn where they studied media make-up design for two years and were taught by international make-up artist Louise Young, from Norwich. Nicola Chapman, of Pixiwoo fame, was also on the course and the three became firm friends.

'When Mac opened in Jarrold we all went along for jobs and we were all successful,' says Carli. 'Danielle and I will continue to work at Mac alongside teaching at the academy as it gives us the most up-to-date training.

'Mac also gives me the opportunity to do the make-up for London Fashion Week and I've also done the make-up for the Olympics and V Festival this year, as well as the make-up for Pixie Geldof, the stars from The Only Way is Essex and many more. It is this real-life experience that we can pass on to our students.' Both women taught make-up at City College Norwich. It was here, after realising that there was a demand for part-time beauty courses, that they decided to set up their own school.

Danielle says: 'I've been teaching beauty and media make-up at City College for the last 10 years and found that I really enjoy teaching people. Some of our students have gone on to work for Mac in Norwich and London and also for Norfolk modelling agency Sandra Reynolds. Now it's time that we offered a course that can fit in with anyone's lifestyle.'

Carli adds: 'We decided to leave college and open our own school after much encouragement from the Pixiwoo sisters. We want our course to be as practical as it can be; after all, this is what being a creative make-up artist is all about. We found a suitable premises and became verified by the Vocational Training Charity Trust (VTCT).'

The Norfolk Hair and Beauty Training Academy offers a range of level 2 beauty and media make-up VTCT qualifications. Students can choose what units they would like to take so the course can take anything from six weeks to six months.

'Anyone is welcome at our school and we do offer help with funding,' says Danielle. 'We teach up to 10 students at any one time, which we feel is more beneficial to student learning as more one-on-one teaching can be given.'

Carli adds: 'We offer many courses from make-up to beauty therapy and there will be opportunities for students to go on work placements to get real-life work experience.

'There is such a big demand for make-up at the moment and it seems to be an industry that is thriving. Our new school strives to provide up-to-date teaching to produce qualified and experienced make-up artists. We hope we can keep building our school and relationships with cosmetic companies to become a well-established training academy but still offer the personal touch.'
