Rejuvenated St Faiths took their revival to unprecedented heights with a shock cup win which leaves them one step away from treading Carrow Road’s hallowed turf.

The Norwich Sunday League Division One newcomers upset the formbook to beat Premier Division outfit Poringland Wanderers 2-1 to clinch a place in the semi-finals of the prestigious Norfolk Sunday Senior Cup.

Current secretary and former manager Richard Day is delighted with the latest boost for the upwardly mobile club’s fortunes.

“We have rebuilt the club over the last five years. We won Division Three and were runners-up in Division Two last year. We are third in Division 1b with games in hand and in the middle of a good cup run.

“This is our first year in senior football and I think we have surprised a few people.”

St Faith’s showed their resilience by soaking up heavy pressure against the Premier Division outfit before taking the lead as half time approached when captain Ben Soanes netted followed a melee after a free kick.

More Wanderers pressure followed after the break but a fine individual effort from Dave Waters increased the advantage before the hosts netted a John Causton consolation goal deep into injury time.

St Faiths are awaiting Friday evening’s semi- final draw on Radio Norfolk with interest but have no particular preference over who they will face.

“We’ll be the underdogs whoever we get,” said Day.

“But we were underdogs on Sunday and came away with a good win.”

He said the club, which plays home matches at Horsham St Faith on a pitch next to the local crematorium, has put past struggles behind it and is enjoying life.

“The club has been buzzing over the last two or three years.

“Each year we have rebuilt and added two or three new players. Morale in the club has been excellent.”

Martin Butcher’s squad, which has an average age of around 30, is studded with experience, with several of the players active in Saturday senior football.

“The success has been based around the team rather any individuals. I guess this season we were looking to consolidate. We didn’t really know what to expect but after losing two out of the first three games we have been unbeaten,” added Day.
