Norwich City goalkeeper Jed Steer is poised for his Football League debut at the weekend after joining Yeovil on a three-month loan.

The 18-year-old is expected to play in the opening League One game against Brentford at Griffin Park on Saturday, and can hardly wait.

“It will be my first competitive match in men’s football so it will be a big test and a test I am looking forward to,” said the England Under-19 ’keeper, who hopes first team football at Huish Park will help further his international career.

“In the last couple of seasons Yeovil have had loan ’keepers. Alex McCarthy has gone on to England Under-21s. I am hoping to come here, do well and push through to the under-21s as well.

“It has been fantastic so far, the lads have been great and they have helped me settle in quite well. There is a lot of countryside around here so it is a bit like Norfolk as well.

“To come and get some experience, this is a great place to come to. There are great supporters, it is a great team and we are playing in a great league as well.”

Steer has played against three Championship teams in Yeovil’s pre-season games as they beat Bristol City 1-0, and drew 1-1 with Cardiff and 2-2 with Southampton.

He said he consulted City team-mates and former Yeovil loanees Oli Johnson and Owain Tudur Jones before agreeing his move to the West Country.

“Both Owain and Oli said it was a great club to come to and they could not speak any higher of Yeovil,” he said.

• Meanwhile, former City midfielder Matt Gill, who moved west on a permanent basis, has been named as Bristol Rovers’ new captain.

The 30-year-old will lead the Pirates in the League Two opener at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

“It’s an honour and I’m looking forward to leading the team,” he said.

“I’ve been captain at Exeter City before, so I have some experience of it, although I’ve always liked to think of myself as a leader on the pitch – even if I didn’t have the armband. I try to lead by example anyway.”
