The day she was born George V was on the throne.

And as she celebrated her 109th birthday this weekend, among the cards received by Vera Read was one from George's granddaughter, the Queen.

Ms Read - who is thought to be Norfolk's oldest woman - marked the milestone occasion with an afternoon tea party surrounded by close family at Springdale residential home in Brundall, along with presents and cards - including the one from the monarch.

It was the first time since her 107th birthday - before the pandemic - that she was able to be joined by all her family for the big day. Ms Read caught Covid herself a few months ago.

Granddaughter Nicola Pryde said: "It's amazing to see her so well on her big day. It's nice to be here. She's been so well looked after."

The family believe that Ms Read is the 22nd oldest living person in the UK - and the oldest in the county.

Her daughter Christine added: "She's survived all this time, through two world wars and Covid. She caught it in between Christmas and New Year. She was in bed for two days, and we thought that was it.

"She beat that. She can beat anything. We just can't believe that we're here today," she said.

Ms Read was born on March 5, 1913 and grew up in Oulton Broad, where she lived until the age of 20 before moving to Norwich.

She married her husband Cecil in 1941. He died in 1983.

She comes from a family of long-living ladies. Her aunt Flo lived to the age of 108, passing away just shy of her 109th birthday.

Ms Read has previously credited living near the sea and eating herrings as the secret to her long life.

Jayne Girling, the wife of her nephew Clive, said: "Last year we were looking at her through the window. We had to stand outside."

Springdale's deputy manager Victoria Tooes honoured Vera's strong character, something that still shines through to this day.

She said: "Vera is known for being full of life and I think that’s her secret.

“We are so proud to have Vera with us reaching this milestone and we hope she continues to have a happy and fulfilling life at Springdale.”
