A city centre road closed by a sinkhole will be open by tonight, according to Anglian Water.
A city centre road closed by a sinkhole will be open by 8pm tonight, according to Anglian Water.
The end of Rouen Road closest to Norwich Castle had to be shut in both directions when a hole opened up underneath a parking car on Wednesday morning.
The hole was caused by a combination of a burst water pipe and the sandy ground particular to the area.
Water board Anglian Water has been working with highways maintenance to fix the hole and the pipe, which runs underneath the road, and originally estimated completion of the works by next week.
But an Anglian Water spokesperson said today the repair to the road surface will be completed and the road reopened by 8pm tonight, a relief for football fans who use Rouen Road before and after Norwich matches.
However, repairs to the footpath won’t be completed until next week.
Norwich fiancés Jamie Clare and Sarah Larter were “shaken” when their car became stuck in the hole for six hours.
