Rail journeys could be disrupted with temperatures set to soar to 30C

Rail passengers have been warned that hot weather could cause changes to timetables over the coming days.

With temperatures predicted to edge towards 30C, rail operator Greater Anglia said its trains may be required to slow down on some lines to protect the track from damage.

In a statement, the firm warned passengers that scheduled journeys may be altered on Sunday and Monday, adding: “...speed restrictions may be introduced on some lines to protect the railway infrastructure and keep services running, but at a slower speed.”

Speed restrictions are imposed by Network Rail to exert less pressure on the rails and prevent them from buckling when they get too hot. Slower speeds are also imposed to protect overhead lines, which can sag during very high temperatures.

Greater Anglia is advising customers to check before they travel. In the event of speed restrictions being introduced, there may be changes to scheduled service. Passengers can check before they travel at greateranglia.co.uk or @greateranglia.
