Motorists and train passengers travelling to and from Norwich over the new year’s weekend will face congestion and up to hour-long delays on some rail services.
As people travel home after visiting their families over Christmas or embark on a weekend getaway, they face the twin perils of railway engineering works and busy roads around major shopping centres..
Train passengers to and from Norwich station will face longer journeys due to engineering works, leading an extra hour on their journey.
Monday looks set to be the busiest day of the bank holiday weekend for National Express East Anglia trains as people travel to and from Norwich after staying with relatives over the extended festive period.
But because of engineering work outside London, between tomorrow and Monday, passengers on hourly trains to and from Norwich will have to get on a bus from Ingatestone, Essex, to complete their journeys.
From Ingatestone, the replacement bus service will go to Newbury Park station where passengers can get on the Central Line to reach Liverpool Street station.
A National Express East Anglia spokesman said: “It is going to be our busiest day on Monday as
most people will be returning from the Christmas break.
“We would advise people to leave enough time for their journeys to and from Liverpool Street between New Year’s Day and Monday.”
Today because of the works, trains were running hourly into Liverpool Street during peak times and half hourly during off peak times.
Tomorrow there will be slightly amended Saturday services for local trains in Norfolk and on January 2 and 3 there will be a Sunday service.
Apart from some fog, motorists in Norwich should face no major problems as they drive across the East Anglia with temperatures falling from 5C(41F) to a minimum of 1C(38F) from tomorrow.
Emma Sharples, a forecaster at weatherquest based at the University of East Anglia, said: “I do not think we are going to see any problems over the weekend.”
