More misery for Norwich drivers

PUBLISHED: 07:00 22 October 2010

Motorists face more misery next week when a busy Norwich road closes for £110,000 road works.

Kett’s Hill will be closed between the roundabout at Riverside Road and the junction with Belsize Road for up to 10 working days while the essential maintenance work takes place.

Workers will be on site between 7.30am and 7pm, and no parking will be available on Kett’s Hill between these times.

During the work, the road will be closed to through traffic and diversion routes will be in place.

The news will come as a latest blow to drivers who faced a headache of road works during the last school holidays.

During the summer break, work was taking place at Drayton High Road, Queen’s Road, Woodcock Road and St Augustine’s Street all at the same time.

Amy Lyall, Norwich City Council’s communications officer for planning and transportation, said: “We have a regular programme of resurfacing - all roads in the city are maintained on a regular basis.

“This is to keep them in good condition so they will last longer and continue to be safe for drivers. Roads deteriorate through use, and if left become dangerous, so it is necessary for public safety that they are maintained carefully and regularly.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience and thank people for their patience during this essential work.”

Vehicle access will be maintained for residents and businesses on Kett’s Hill and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

The work will be carried out by May Gurney.

For details of replacement bus routes, please contact the bus company concerned.

Kett’s Hill was one of the areas of Norwich named by consultants as having a high concentration of subsidence. The city is riddled with old mines between 12ft and 90ft beneath the surface. Some date back to the 11th century.
