Temporary traffic lights have left rush hour motorists heading into Norwich on the A140 facing tailbacks of five miles less than a month after similar delays.

The south bound lane of the Norwich to Ipswich road has been closed near to the Hempnall junction with the B1135 and B1527, between Tasburgh and Long Stratton.

Two-way traffic lights left Monday morning drivers facing long delays.

Northbound rush hour traffic heading towards Norwich stretched back for five miles through Long Stratton and as far as the Cherry Lane Garden Centre at Pulham.

The congestion was made worse when a car also broke down close to the traffic lights at 9.15am.

A spokesman for Norfolk County Council said a manhole chamber and cover had collapsed forcing BT to close the carriageway to allow emergency repairs.

The delays come three weeks after emergency work by BT to fix a similar problem on the same stretch of road also left motorists heading into and out of Norwich facing lengthy tailbacks.
