A list of potential sites to create thousands of new homes and jobs in the Broadland area was revealed yesterday.

The sites where Broadland District Council is potentially prepared to see new homes and businesses built between now and 2026 were earmarked at a meeting of the council's cabinet.

About 1,000 homes have been earmarked in Hellesdon, either side of Drayton High Road where the Royal Norwich Golf Club is currently situated.

If it was given the go ahead, the 120-acre site would also include a recreation ground. Members at the club have previously been warned about the prospect of it making way for homes in the long-term.

Hellesdon Hospital and its grounds could provide land for up to 200 new homes. Part of the land could also be used for offices and health facilities.

Aylsham could benefit from 1,400 new homes across four sites. About 200 homes and an area for sports pitches could be built north of the B1145 on Cawston Road.

A further 300 homes have been shortlisted for the site south of Burgh Road and west of the A140 with another 600 proposed for the site opposite on the north of Burgh Road. This development could also include an extension to the playing field.

The area south of Buxton Road and east of Norwich Road in Aylsham could see 300 new homes.

A scrap yard east of the B1150 in Station Road, Coltishall, could accommodate 100 new homes and further 100 homes could be built in Horsham and Newton St Faith on the forecourt of Crown Garage and agricultural land east of Manor Road. Nearly 500 new homes could be created in Reepham, 200 between Cawston Road and Wood Dalling Road and around 250 on the B1145 Dereham Road.

The area between Salhouse Road and The Avenues in Wroxham, which is currently agricultural land, has been earmarked for 300 houses and community facilities.

The plans will now go out for public consulation.

Andrew Proctor, leader of Broadland District Council, said: 'The important thing is to ensure that we get these proposals out to everyone in the community whether they are parish groups or people who don't want anything to go ahead so they can get their views to us.

'There will be a 12-week consultation and it's essential that people see the plans which will be on our websites and in the news.

'We haven't got the right mix of homes for the demographic of the area and young people need homes as well. People want to live and work here. This is one part of the equations for future development.'

The public consultation is due to take place in early September and will last 12 weeks..
