Plans for a huge new development on the outskirts of Norwich are set to move forward next week, when councillors consider a report into the proposals.

The plans for 1,233 new homes, a link road, recreation areas, primary school and open space on land off Blue Boar Lane in Sprowston backing on to the Tesco superstore were approved three years ago, but the scheme was mothballed by the downturn in the housing market.

But Broadland District Council is set to consider a report on the proposals at Wednesday's planning meeting and the development could start as soon as both parties sign a section 106 agreement attached to the planning permission.

The news has been welcomed by Sprowston Parish Council whose clerk June Hunt said: 'We are pleased the developers have renewed interest in the plans, which is maybe an indicator of the buoyancy of the area and renwed optimism in the housing market.'

The development on the 208 acre site – the size of more than 80 football pitches – could see more than 5,000 people moving to the area.

There will be a new link road between Salhouse Road and Wroxham Road alongside cycleways and footpaths and a dedicated 20mph bus link to Linacre Avenue, which will allow the extension of the existing 21/22 service to the city centre. A football pitch, five aside pitches and tennis courts are also planned.

The developers behind the scheme are Persimmon Homes, Hopkins Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

Martin Davidson, land director for Persimmon Homes Anglia, said: 'We look forward to hearing the decision made at next week's meeting by Broadland District Council with regards to the re-confirmation of our proposal.

'This will allow us to continue with our evolving plans to bring much needed new housing to the area.'

James Carswell, Broadland district councillor for Sprowston East, welcomed the news but warned that some residents were concerned about the level of growth around the community.

He added: 'I would also like to see the infrastructure in place for any new housing development.

'But if the parish is pleased and it's what the community wants to see, it's positive for Sprowston.'
