Tom Trybull insists Norwich City’s big-time reputation counts for nothing in the Championship.

The German midfielder had no hesitation in joining a club who had spent four seasons in the top flight since 2011, and has impressed in his first five appearances following a free transfer in the summer.

Daniel Farke hailed the 24-year-old’s League Cup display at Brentford, but Trybull has already seen enough of English football to know there is a long slog ahead.

“What I was told when I came here is that Norwich is a big club who have dropped down into the second league. Like Stuttgart maybe in Germany,” he said. “Maybe if you asked the coach and the players of Huddersfield last season no-one would have asked if they were a big club. It is not important. You just have to work hard every day in training to give your best in the games.

“We have a lot of examples in Germany of smaller clubs going higher or bigger clubs dropping out. At the end we want to be on top. If it is possible to be on the first or the second place then of course every team would want this but we just want to be as high as possible. The football is maybe a bit different if you compare the top two leagues in Germany.

“My first impression here is the football in the second league is better. I don’t like to talk about myself but I’m happy the fans like me and the first impression is positive. I like to hear that of course, but I want to go on.”

Trybull’s impact at Griffin Park prompted Farke to joke he hoped the Premier League’s finest were not watching the cultured central midfielder, who capped a fine individual performance with the assist for Josh Murphy to seal the cup win.

“We know he is full of potential. At the age of 18 or 19 he was highly rated in Germany and played in a Werder Bremen side who were competing for the Champions League,” said Farke. “He was playing for a famous German manager called Klaus Allofs who said with Tom’s ability he could play for Barcelona. He had two or three really difficult years and perhaps for his career took some bad decisions but we totally trust him.

“We had a good feeling when he came here that he is able to find his focus and bring his abilities and skills to the pitch. I am sure he can play an important role.

“It is not so easy when you play in a foreign country for the first team on such a high level.”
