Bananas and chocolate were on the menu for the boys and girls of the 3rd & 4th Sea Scout group when they visited the Sainsbury's store at Pound Lane, Thorpe St Andrew.

The pack and their leaders learned how the store operates behind the scenes, seeing the vast chillers and freezers and where the lorries deliver the goods into the warehouse for its 24-hour operation.

The group also had a lesson in Fairtrade, took part in a Fairtrade shop floor quiz and sampled some Fairtrade products including bananas and chocolate.

The Sea Scouts will use their Fairtrade learning as first part of their Global Challenge Award, whereby they choose an international issue such as trade and show an understanding of the issues and benefits involved in Fairtrade.

The second part of their Global Challenge will be to make contact with Scouts from another country, and they will do this at their Norfolk Jamboree during the summer at the Norfolk Showground.

Here they will meet Scouts from countries including the USA and Kenya and take part in activities such as archery, abseiling and crafts.

Scout group leader Simon Mobbs said: 'The Sainsbury's evening has given the Scouts awareness of business working and world trading whereby Fairtrade seeks to overcome exploitation.

'By learning about Fairtrade, whereby farmers in underdeveloped countries receive a fair price for goods, the Sea Scouts can appreciate the significance of Fairtrade.'

Volunteers from 3rd & 4th Norwich Sea Scouts, Norwich United Youth Football Club, Norwich Swans Swimming Club and pupils from Sprowston High School are providing a bag-packing service for customers each weekend during March to raise money for Sports Relief. The Sports Relief weekend is this Friday to Sunday, and the store is hoping to raise at least £6,000 with the help of the community.
